Mira Arvind is a senior at the University of Minnesota studying industrial systems engineering. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy parents are immigrants. My parents are from India originally, so my dad came here in the ’90s for his master’s. He went to school in Duluth. So that’s kind of how he got settled down here. Then my mom came over shortly after they got married. We’re based in Chicago right now. I have a little brother. He goes to school there as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince my dad went to Duluth, he was really pushing for me to look into the U as well because they had a good engineering program. So I think that’s the main reason why I came, and also since I’m out of state. I think that the U had one of the best options out of everything I got accepted into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have yet to see a single ICE agent, or maybe I haven’t noticed, but I know people who are more aware of it than I am and are more nervous than I am. Personally, I’ve not been affected yet, and I’ve just been going to class in person as usual. I think nothing really has happened to me that’s really made me concerned for my safety so far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people I know are more nervous since they’re also people of color. I think they’re doing more proactive stuff. A lot of people are taking classes from home. I think for the CSE department, it’s more of an individual thing. You had to ask [for online classes]. What they do is record stuff and then they post it later. So I think that’s one of the main options that they’re giving for students who are not outwardly asking for extensions to come back in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI definitely feel like there’s a tense energy on campus. I would say a lot more people are cautious about what they do and how long they stay outside. Especially for club events that happen later in the evening on Fridays, you could definitely tell there are slightly less people than there were before this became very big. So yeah, I think that’s one of the main things I’ve observed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think in a way, when there’s something as adverse as this\u2026 the community becomes stronger in some way. It might not be like super out there, but I think for this especially, a lot of people are coming together, which I think is really nice to see. There are a lot more support groups or people are sending out resources, which I think is super great and helpful to anyone who may have been more impacted by ICE than others have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
