Editors’ Note
The Twin Cities was still in the midst of Operation Metro Surge as students returned to campus for spring semester, and our newsroom was tasked with choosing a community to report on for the next four months. When Alex Pretti was killed by ICE agents just four days after classes resumed, our team decided to take a new approach to the definition of community: people united through shared experiences and hardship.
As thousands of federal agents filled the streets of Minneapolis, we set out to document the hidden impacts the federal immigration crackdown had on the University of Minnesota through the stories of its people and community.
Our mission is to accurately and respectfully report on the experiences of those impacted by Operation Metro Surge through interviews with students and community members, survey data and analyses of the lasting impacts on campus.
