Monica Slade is a second-year dance major at the University of Minnesota. As someone who identifies as Black, gender non-binary and lesbian, they said they feel a part of many different communities on campus. Slade said they hope to be an example for other performing artists who may not see themselves reflected on stage or in the arts.

“An experience of joy I felt recently was after performing in the dance program Spring University Dance Theatre. A young person who will be attending the U in the upcoming year came up to me and told me that I was inspirational. And I know from experience that seeing yourself reflected on stage by somebody doing something you want can make a world of difference.

I’m part of the Black, queer/lesbian and trans nonbinary community. I tend to spend more time with people who are in the queer community. I grew up with my parents and the Black community around me so these communities have soaked their way into my everyday life and the things that make me happy.

Due to the constant activity with a dance major, I haven’t really been able to go to any clubs from my desired affinity groups. It makes me kind of sad but I am more interested in not overdoing myself. Next semester, when I have more time in my schedule I’ll be watching out for the queer student groups and the Black Student Union.”
